Injection Moulding Machine for Plastic Mugs

Plastic mugs are made on horizontal injection moulding machines from PP, SAN or copolyester, with the handle formed in the same shot by a slide or split cavity. Machine size depends on the cavity count, the mould width taken up by the slides and the shot weight. Clear grades need full drying, or splay shows through the wall.

Mug moulds carry side actions and a deep core, so machine selection looks at platen space, opening stroke and shot control for clear or coloured grades. Pratishna Engineers supplies horizontal injection moulding machines for mug production and can recommend a configuration for your tool.

Machine Requirements for Plastic Mug Moulding

A mug tool is more than a cup tool because of the handle, and the machine needs to suit these points:

  • Platen space for slides that form the handle undercut
  • Opening stroke for a deep body plus slide travel
  • Dryer capacity for SAN and copolyester before moulding
  • Smooth gate finish on the base, away from the lip
  • Even wall to avoid sink where the handle joins
  • Food-contact resin kept separate from regrind

Recommended Machine for Plastic Mugs

Single and low-cavity mug moulds often fit the E Series (75-180 T). When more cavities are added, the slides widen the mould and the C Series (140-320 T) gives more space between tie-bars. Large beer mugs or high-output tools with several slides may move to the H Series (120-350 T).

FAQs / Buyer Questions

Common questions from mug makers about the machine and the mould.

  • Which Injection Moulding Machine Is Used to Make Plastic Mugs?
Many mug tools run on a horizontal machine in the E Series range. Higher cavity counts, wider slide moulds or larger mugs move to the C or H Series, depending on tie-bar space and shot weight.
  • How Is the Mug Handle Moulded?
The handle opening is an undercut, so the mould uses a slide or a split cavity that moves sideways before ejection. Gate placement matters too, as a weld line at the handle root is a common crack point.
  • Why Do Clear Mugs Show Silver Streaks?
Silver streaks, or splay, usually come from moisture in SAN or copolyester. Drying the granules to the supplier’s conditions and keeping the hopper covered normally clears it. Long residence time in the barrel can also cause yellowing.
  • Can Melamine Mugs Be Made on an Injection Moulding Machine?
No. Melamine crockery is a thermoset made by compression moulding, a different process. Confirm the material before asking for a quotation, since PP, SAN and copolyester mugs are the injection moulded types.
  • Can Pratishna Recommend a Machine for My Plastic Mug?
Yes. Share the mug drawing or sample, material, part weight, cavity count, mould dimensions with slides, and monthly output, and Pratishna Engineers will recommend a suitable machine.
  • Does the Machine Suit Other Household Kitchenware Too?
Yes. The same machines can mould plastic bowls, tiffin boxes, kitchen containers and measuring cups, subject to the mould size and cavity count of each part.
