Injection Moulding Machine for Flip-Top Caps
Flip-top caps, the hinged dispensing closures on shampoo, sauce and lotion bottles, are made on horizontal injection moulding machines from living hinge grade PP. Cavity count and mould size decide the machine. Gating matters most: melt must flow straight across the hinge line so the hinge survives repeated opening.
For flip-tops, selection focuses on hinge-friendly gating, steady mould temperature and room for a closing station. Pratishna Engineers supplies horizontal and hybrid injection moulding machines for flip-top cap production and can suggest a machine set-up for your hinge and mould.

Machine Requirements for Flip-Top Cap Moulding
The hinge is where flip-top caps pass or fail, and most machine requirements trace back to it. Check these:
- Gate placed so melt flows across the hinge line
- Living hinge PP grade at a steady melt temperature
- Hinge flexed right after ejection to set its strength
- Closing station or robot built into the moulding cell
- Lid-to-body snap fit held from cavity to cavity
- Opening stroke and ejection suited to the open-lid position
Recommended Machine for Flip-Top Caps
Flip-top caps take more mould space than plain screw caps, since the lid is moulded open beside the body. Smaller tools can run on the Hybrid PH Series (120-140 T), where electric injection gives repeatable fill, or on the E Series (75-180 T). Higher-cavity moulds go to the C Series (140-320 T), with the H Series (120-350 T) for the largest.

FAQs / Buyer Questions
Questions we hear from dispensing closure makers.
Which Injection Moulding Machine Is Used to Make Flip-Top Caps?
A horizontal machine with enough platen space for the open-lid mould. Low-cavity tools can suit the Hybrid PH or E Series, and high-cavity tools usually need the C or H Series. Why Does a Flip-Top Hinge Crack After a Few Openings?
Usual causes are a gate that sends melt along the hinge instead of across it, a weld line meeting at the hinge, or a hinge left unflexed after ejection. The grade matters too, so use a PP made for living hinges. Is the Lid Closed Inside the Moulding Cell?
Often yes. A closing station or robot snaps the lid shut after ejection, which also flexes the hinge while it is warm. Plan the cell layout and mould opening for this station from the start.
Can a Flip-Top Cap Have a TPE Seal?
Yes, but a TPE seal moulded onto the cap is a two-material job and needs a two-shot machine built to application. The single-material PP cap runs on the standard series listed here. Can Pratishna Recommend a Machine for My Flip-Top Cap?
Yes. Share the cap drawing or sample, hinge design, material grade, cap weight, mould dimensions, cavity count and output target, and Pratishna Engineers will recommend a suitable machine.Does the Machine Suit Other Dispensing Closures Too?
Yes. Given the right mould, the same class of machine can produce spouts and pourers, dosing caps, generic screw closures and aerosol overcaps.
