Injection Moulding Machine for Pen Barrels

Pen barrels are made on horizontal injection moulding machines in multi-cavity hot runner moulds, from crystal PS, SAN, PP or copolyester. Cavity count, shot weight and barrel length set the machine size. The long, slender core is the process point to watch: if it deflects under injection pressure, the wall runs uneven and the refill seats off centre.

Machine selection for pen barrels centres on steady shot-to-shot injection across many cavities, fast injection for the thin wall and a mould size the platens can hold. Pratishna Engineers supplies horizontal injection moulding machines for pen barrel production and can recommend a configuration for your barrel, mould and output.

Machine Requirements for Pen Barrel Moulding

A pen barrel is a long, thin tube where wall uniformity and clarity decide whether the part passes. Points to check when selecting a machine:

  • Shot weight matched to a high-cavity hot runner mould
  • Fast injection to fill a thin wall over a long flow
  • Even wall around the core to hold bore concentricity
  • Polished cavities and dried resin for clear barrels
  • Bore and tip taper that seat the refill straight
  • Stable cycles so every cavity fills to the same weight

Recommended Machine for Pen Barrels

A single barrel weighs little, so machine size comes from the number of cavities and the length of the mould. Many pen barrel moulds fit the E Series (75-180 T). High-cavity hot runner tools for long barrels, or moulds with a wider footprint, may move to the C Series (140-320 T) or H Series (120-350 T).

FAQs / Buyer Questions

Questions pen makers ask most often before choosing a barrel machine.

  • Which Injection Moulding Machine Is Used to Make Pen Barrels?
Pen barrel moulds run on horizontal machines sized to the complete mould rather than to one barrel. Tools with fewer cavities often sit in the E Series range, while long barrels in high-cavity hot runner tools move up to the C or H Series.
  • Why Does a Pen Barrel Come Out With an Uneven Wall?
A long, thin core forms the bore, and melt pressure can push it sideways. Gating at the end of the barrel, support for the free end of the core and a controlled fill speed keep the bore concentric.
  • Do Transparent Pen Barrels Need Drying?
SAN and copolyester pick up moisture and should be dried before moulding, or the barrel shows splay and haze. Crystal PS usually needs little drying. A polished cavity and clean material handling keep the ink window clear.
  • Can the Barrel Be Printed or Decorated After Moulding?
Yes. Printing, hot stamping and other decoration run at separate stations after moulding. Moulding has to deliver a clean surface, free of flow lines and ejector marks where the print sits.
  • Can Pratishna Recommend a Machine for My Pen Barrel?
Yes. Share the barrel drawing or sample, material, part weight, mould size, number of cavities, runner type and required output, and Pratishna Engineers will recommend a suitable machine.
  • Does the Machine Suit Other Stationery Parts Too?
Yes. The same class of machine can mould pen caps, marker barrels, sharpeners and plastic rulers, subject to the mould size and shot weight of each part.
