Injection Moulding Machine for Pump Impellers

Pump impellers are made on horizontal injection moulding machines from modified PPE, glass-filled PPS, glass-filled PA66 or POM. Machine size follows impeller diameter, shroud design and shot weight. Low, even shrinkage matters most, because the moulded vane profile has to hold the pump curve and run balanced at speed.

Selection for impellers centres on shot consistency, mould temperature control and gate position, since fibre orientation and weld lines decide balance and vane strength. Pratishna Engineers supplies horizontal and hybrid injection moulding machines for pump impellers and can suggest a configuration for your impeller and mould.

Machine Requirements for Pump Impeller Moulding

Impellers are judged on balance and vane accuracy far more than on appearance. Points to settle before choosing a machine:

  • Low, repeatable shrinkage so vane profiles hold the pump curve
  • Gate placed to keep weld lines away from vane roots
  • Even fibre orientation in glass-filled PPS and PA66 for balance
  • Accurate core location so the hub bore stays concentric
  • Dryer capacity for PA66 and modified PPE before moulding
  • Shot weight matched to impeller diameter and shroud design

Recommended Machine for Pump Impellers

Impellers for domestic and small monoblock pumps can run on the Hybrid PH Series (120-140 T) or the E Series (75-180 T), where shot-to-shot consistency counts most. Larger impellers and glass-filled PPS grades suit the C Series (140-320 T) or H Series (120-350 T), which give more injection capacity and mould space.

FAQs / Buyer Questions

Questions pump makers raise when they move impellers from metal to plastic or add a new pump size.

  • Which Injection Moulding Machine Is Used to Make Pump Impellers?
A horizontal machine sized by impeller diameter and shot weight. Small domestic impellers sit in the lower tonnage band, while larger or glass-filled PPS impellers need more clamping force and injection capacity.
  • Which Plastic Suits a Pump Impeller in Hot or Abrasive Water?
Modified PPE suits hot water service because it resists hydrolysis and shrinks little and evenly. Glass-filled PPS takes higher temperatures and abrasive duty. POM and glass-filled PA66 suit cold water impellers.
  • Why Do Moulded Impellers Fail the Balance Test?
Usual causes are uneven fibre orientation, a core that shifts under injection pressure, and sections that cool at different rates. Gate position, balanced filling and even cooling around the hub cut rejects at balancing.
  • Can Closed Impellers Be Injection Moulded in One Piece?
Open and semi-open impellers mould in one piece. Closed impellers are often moulded as a vane body and a separate shroud, then welded, because the enclosed passages cannot release from a standard core.
  • Can Pratishna Recommend a Machine for My Pump Impeller?
Yes. Share the impeller drawing or sample, material grade, part weight, mould size, number of cavities and annual quantity, and Pratishna Engineers will recommend a suitable machine.
  • Does the Machine Suit Other Pump and Valve Parts Too?
Yes. Similar machines mould diffusers, pump housings, mechanical seal carriers, wear rings and pump connectors, depending on part size and the mould.
