Injection Moulding Machine for Pump Housings and Volute Casings
Pump housings, including volutes, casings, motor housings and split cases, are produced on horizontal injection moulding machines in glass-filled PPS, glass-filled PPA, glass-filled PA66 or PP. Volute projected area, side cores for the ports and mould height set machine size. Seal faces and ports should come finished from the mould, with no machining.
Machine choice for a housing balances clamping force over a large wetted area against injection capacity for heavily glass-filled grades. Pratishna Engineers supplies horizontal injection moulding machines for pump housings and casings and can recommend one sized to your volute mould.

Machine Requirements for Pump Housing Moulding
A pump housing carries line pressure and locates the seal, so machine selection should cover:
- Clamping force for the full volute and flange projected area
- Side cores or slides for suction and delivery ports
- Screw and barrel wear protection for heavily glass-filled grades
- Flat seal faces that need no machining after moulding
- Uniform wall thickness around the volute for burst strength
- Mould height and opening stroke for deep motor housings
Recommended Machine for Pump Housings
Small volutes and motor end housings can start on the E Series (75-180 T). Most casings for domestic and agricultural pumps, with side cores for both ports, sit on the C Series (140-320 T), while large split cases and deep motor housings move to the H Series (120-350 T) for mould height and clamping force.

FAQs / Buyer Questions
Questions from pump makers replacing cast metal housings with moulded ones.
Which Injection Moulding Machine Is Used to Make Pump Housings?
Housings run on mid to high tonnage horizontal machines because the volute presents a large projected area and carries side cores. The heaviest split cases sit near the top of the tonnage range. Why Should a Glass-filled Pump Housing Not Be Machined After Moulding?
Machining cuts through the resin-rich skin and leaves glass fibre exposed at the wetted or sealing surface, which matters for potable water. Ports, threads and seal faces should be formed finished in the mould. Can a Plastic Housing Replace a Cast Metal Pump Housing?
In many pump types it can, often at lower cost and weight, and moulding repeats complex volute shapes more consistently than casting. The housing then has to pass seal face flatness and burst pressure tests for its rating.
What Does Glass-filled PPS or PPA Need From the Machine?
High melt temperatures, a hot mould for surface finish and crystallinity, and a wear-resistant screw and barrel for the glass content. Holding pressure and gate size have to pack thick flange sections without sink. Can Pratishna Recommend a Machine for My Pump Housing?
Yes. Share the housing drawing or sample, material grade, part weight, mould dimensions, core pull details and annual quantity, and Pratishna Engineers will recommend a suitable machine.Does the Machine Suit Other Pump and Valve Housings Too?
Yes. The same machines can mould valve bodies, strainer and filter housings, diaphragm pump heads and larger impellers, subject to mould size.
