Injection Moulding Machine for Light Guides

Light guides, both thin light guide plates and small light pipes, are moulded on horizontal injection moulding machines in optical PMMA or PC. Plate size and wall thinness set injection pressure and clamping force. Mould temperature decides how well the surface dots or microstructure replicate, and warpage must be held low because it shows as uneven brightness.

For a light guide plate, machine selection centres on injection pressure and speed for a thin wedge, plus steady mould temperature. For light guides, Pratishna Engineers supplies Hybrid PH and horizontal injection moulding machines and can recommend a configuration for your plate or pipe.

Machine Requirements for Light Guide Moulding

A light guide moves light by its geometry and surface pattern, so the moulding has to copy both. Points for machine selection:

  • High injection pressure to fill the thin wedge end
  • Mould temperature control for microstructure replication
  • Low warpage so luminance stays uniform across the plate
  • Clamp and platen sized for a large flat projected area
  • Dried optical PMMA or PC with clean material handling
  • Light pipes with polished faces and no ejector marks on exits

Recommended Machine for Light Guides

Small light pipes and indicator guides are light shots for the Hybrid PH Series (120-140 T), or for the E Series (75-180 T) in multi-cavity tools. Light guide plates for larger displays and luminaires need more clamping force over a big flat area, so they are sized on the C Series (140-320 T), and the largest on the H Series (120-350 T).

FAQs / Buyer Questions

Common questions from display, lighting and electronics buyers about moulding light guides.

  • Which Injection Moulding Machine Is Used to Make Light Guides?
Pratishna Engineers matches the machine to the part. Light pipes usually fit the Hybrid PH or E Series. Thin plates with a large projected area sit on the C or H Series.
  • How Is the Microstructure on a Light Guide Plate Made?
The dots or prisms are formed on a mould insert, often made by photolithography or electroforming rather than ordinary machining. The moulding then has to copy them faithfully, which depends mostly on mould temperature.
  • Why Does Warpage Matter So Much on a Light Guide?
A warped plate changes how light leaves its surface, and the finished display or luminaire shows bright or dark bands. Balanced cooling and controlled packing are the main defences.
  • Is Rapid Heat-Cycle or Injection-Compression Moulding Needed?
Sometimes. Where a thin plate does not replicate fully, mould heating cycles or injection-compression are used. These change the mould and machine setup, so they are planned separately on enquiry.
  • Can Pratishna Recommend a Machine for My Light Guide?
Yes. Share the light guide drawing, plate size and thickness profile, insert details, resin, cavity count and monthly volume, and Pratishna Engineers will recommend a suitable machine.
  • Does the Machine Suit Other Lighting Optics Too?
Often, yes, depending on the tool. Instrument windows, cover lenses, optical lenses and lens holders can run on the same class of machine.
