Injection Moulding Machine for Single-use Surgical Instrument Handles and Bodies
Single-use surgical instrument handles and bodies are made on horizontal injection moulding machines from PC, ABS, PP or PA, with soft TPE grips added by two-shot moulding. Part length and the grip material decide the clamping force and any second injection unit. Grip bond matters most, since both resins must stay joined after sterilisation.
For instrument handles, selection focuses on the two-material process, gates kept away from grip faces and resins that survive the chosen sterilisation dose. Pratishna Engineers builds special purpose injection moulding machines to application for two-shot handles, supplies horizontal machines for single-material bodies and can recommend a configuration.

Machine Requirements for Surgical Instrument Handle Moulding
A disposable instrument body pairs a rigid core with a soft grip and must come through sterilisation unchanged:
- Second injection unit and mould rotation for TPE grips
- Validated bond pairing between rigid core and TPE
- Resin grades that resist gamma or EtO discolouring
- Drying for PC and PA before each shot
- Platen length and stroke for long instrument bodies
- Gate and weld line placement away from pivot bosses
Recommended Machine for Surgical Instrument Handles
Two-shot handles with a bonded TPE grip need a machine built to application, and Pratishna Engineers builds Special Purpose Injection Moulding Machines for that work. Single-material bodies, trigger housings and separate grip parts can run on standard presses. Shorter parts fit the E Series (75-180 T), and C Series (140-320 T) and H Series (120-350 T) machines take long bodies and multi-cavity tools.

FAQs / Buyer Questions
What disposable instrument makers ask before choosing a process.
Which Injection Moulding Machine Is Used to Make Single-use Surgical Instrument Handles?
Two-shot handles with a soft grip need a special purpose machine built to the application. Rigid bodies and single-material parts run on standard horizontal machines, the E Series for smaller parts and the C or H Series for long bodies. How Is the TPE Grip Joined to the Handle?
In a two-shot process the rigid core is moulded first, then the TPE is injected over it in a second station. The resin pair must bond, so grades are matched and the bond is tested before validation.Which Resins Survive Gamma or EtO Sterilisation?
That depends on the method and dose. Some grades embrittle or yellow under gamma, so the resin is chosen with its supplier’s sterilisation data. The TPE grip also needs its own skin-contact biocompatibility data.
Can the Grip Be a Separate Part Instead of Two-Shot?
Yes. A separate TPE sleeve can be moulded on a standard machine and assembled onto the rigid body. That avoids a two-shot tool but adds an assembly step and a fit to control. Can Pratishna Recommend a Machine for My Surgical Instrument Handle?
Yes. Share the handle drawings, rigid and grip resins, single or two-shot route, part weights, mould dimensions and annual volume, and Pratishna Engineers will recommend a suitable machine.Does the Machine Suit Other Medical Device Parts Too?
Yes, subject to the mould. Standard series machines also run medical device housings, medical equipment parts, dental components and autoinjector components, each with its own tool.
