Injection Moulding Machine for Pipette Tips

Pipette tips are moulded on horizontal injection moulding machines, in high-cavity hot runner tools, from medical-grade high melt flow PP. Cavity count drives clamping force, while tip length sets mould height and opening stroke. Straightness and end-hole concentricity matter most, and thin deep walls make core deflection the main risk.

Selection for pipette tips focuses on fast, repeatable filling of long thin cores and consistent mould opening so robots can pick tips and load racks. Pratishna Engineers supplies horizontal injection moulding machines for pipette tip production and can recommend a configuration for your tip, mould and automation.

Share your tip sizes, cavity count, mould dimensions and racking plan, and Pratishna Engineers will recommend a suitable machine.

Machine Requirements for Pipette Tip Moulding

A pipette tip is a deep, thin-walled cone on a long core, so the demands fall on injection and mould movement:

  • Fast injection speed to fill thin walls before freezing
  • Balanced hot runner filling for equal tip straightness
  • Low injection pressure to protect fine core inserts
  • Repeatable mould opening position for robot pick-and-place
  • Opening stroke and ejection for long tip release
  • Clean moulding area and closed transfer to racks

Recommended Machine for Pipette Tips

Pipette tips weigh little, so cavity count and automation set the machine. The Hybrid PH Series (120-140 T) leads here, since electric injection gives fast, repeatable fill on thin walls. E Series (75-180 T) machines suit smaller tools, and higher-cavity layouts can move to the H or C Series. Mould-open repeatability for the robot is checked against your automation plan.

FAQs / Buyer Questions

Questions tip makers bring to our engineers before a new line.

  • Which Injection Moulding Machine Is Used to Make Pipette Tips?
A horizontal machine sized to the cavity layout and robot. Hybrid PH machines suit many tip tools, the E Series covers smaller moulds, and very high-cavity tools may need the H or C Series.
  • Why Is High Melt Flow PP Used for Pipette Tips?
High melt flow PP fills deep thin walls quickly at lower injection pressure. Lower pressure reduces core deflection and wear on the fine inserts that form the tip end, which keeps the end hole round and centred.
  • What Causes Bent or Off-Centre Pipette Tips?
Uneven hot runner tip temperatures, unbalanced cooling and core shift during fill are the usual causes. Ejecting before the tip has cooled enough can also bow it, so cooling time is set for straightness rather than speed.
  • Does the Machine Need to Work With Automation?
Usually yes. Tips are often picked by a robot and loaded straight into racks, so the machine needs a repeatable mould-open position, a robot interface and space for the take-out arm.
  • Can Pratishna Recommend a Machine for My Pipette Tip?
Yes. Share the tip drawing, resin grade, cavity count, mould dimensions, racking or packing method and target output, and Pratishna Engineers will recommend a suitable machine.
  • Does the Machine Suit Other Laboratory Consumables Too?
Yes, subject to the mould. Petri dishes, 96-well microplates and PCR plates, blood collection tubes and specimen containers can run on similar machines, with the size set by each tool.
