Injection Moulding Machine for Petri Dishes

Petri dishes are made on horizontal injection moulding machines from general-purpose polystyrene, or PP where the dish must be autoclaved, usually with base and lid in multi-cavity moulds. Base projected area and cavity count decide clamping force. A flat, clear base without warpage or flow marks matters most, since the plate is read through it.

Machine selection for petri dishes focuses on fast filling of thin, flat walls, even cooling across the base and tight control of the stacking ring so lids sit level. Pratishna Engineers supplies horizontal injection moulding machines for petri dish moulding and can recommend a configuration for your dish and mould.

Machine Requirements for Petri Dish Moulding

A petri dish is a thin, clear, flat part that must stack and vent correctly, which shapes the machine choice:

  • Fast injection to fill thin flat walls without flow lines
  • Even mould cooling to keep the base flat
  • Stacking ring and vent rib tolerance held shot to shot
  • Polished cavities and clean PS handling for clear parts
  • Clamping force for the full base and lid projected area
  • Resin choice that survives the planned sterilisation method

Recommended Machine for Petri Dishes

Dishes are light, but each flat base adds a large projected area, and cavity count multiplies it. Lower-cavity base and lid tools can suit E Series (75-180 T) or Hybrid PH Series (120-140 T) machines. Higher-cavity tools and stack moulds usually need clamp and opening stroke from H Series (120-350 T) or C Series machines.

FAQs / Buyer Questions

Common questions from petri dish and lab plastics makers.

  • Which Injection Moulding Machine Is Used to Make Petri Dishes?
A horizontal machine sized by base area multiplied by cavity count. Hybrid PH and E Series machines suit smaller tools, while higher-cavity and stack moulds generally move to the H or C Series.
  • Should Petri Dishes Be Made in PS or PP?
General-purpose PS is standard for single-use culture dishes because it is clear and stiff. PP is chosen where the dish must survive autoclaving, though it is less clear. Gamma or EtO sterilisation after moulding also limits which grades suit.
  • Why Do Petri Dish Lids Rock on the Base?
Warpage in the base or variation in the stacking ring and vent ribs stops the lid sitting level. Uneven mould cooling, an off-centre gate and inconsistent holding pressure are the common causes.
  • Can Bases and Lids Run in the Same Mould?
Yes, as a family mould, though the two parts fill and shrink differently and need balanced runners. Some plants run separate base and lid tools or stack moulds, which need extra opening stroke and mould height.
  • Can Pratishna Recommend a Machine for My Petri Dish?
Yes. Share the dish drawing, resin grade, base and lid cavity counts, mould type and dimensions, sterilisation method and target output, and Pratishna Engineers will recommend a suitable machine.
  • Does the Machine Suit Other Laboratory and Diagnostic Parts Too?
Yes, subject to the mould. Laboratory and diagnostic trays, 96-well microplates, specimen containers and test kit housings can run on comparable machines once each tool is sized.
