Injection Moulding Machine for 96-Well Microplates and PCR Plates

96-well microplates and PCR plates are made on horizontal injection moulding machines, usually in low-cavity moulds, from PP, PS or PC. Plate footprint and shot weight set the clamp size, and the many deep well cores need even cooling. Flatness matters most, because a warped plate will not seat in a thermal cycler or reader.

Machine selection for microplates focuses on fast, repeatable filling of thin well walls, close mould temperature control and stable flatness, often inside a clean moulding area the buyer sets up. Pratishna Engineers supplies horizontal injection moulding machines for plate production and can recommend a configuration for your format and mould.

Machine Requirements for Microplate and PCR Plate Moulding

A plate is one flat part carrying dozens of thin wells, and every well has to match its neighbours:

  • Fast injection to fill thin PCR well walls evenly
  • Balanced hot runner gating across the plate footprint
  • Cooling on every well core against core shift
  • Mould temperature control for a flat skirt and deck
  • Masterbatch dosing for black or white PS plates
  • Repeatable mould-open position for robot plate take-out

Recommended Machine for Microplates and PCR Plates

A microplate is a large flat part with a dense core pattern, so mould size and plate area set the machine more than shot weight. Single-cavity tools can fit Hybrid PH Series (120-140 T) or E Series (75-180 T) machines. Two-cavity and skirted PCR plate tools generally need an H Series (120-350 T) or C Series (140-320 T) press.

FAQs / Buyer Questions

What laboratory consumable makers ask before tooling a plate.

  • Which Injection Moulding Machine Is Used to Make 96-Well Microplates?
Plate tools are larger than they look because of the full footprint and core count. Single-cavity moulds often run on Hybrid PH or E Series machines, while two-cavity or skirted PCR plate tools move up to the C or H Series.
  • Why Is Flatness the Main Check on a Microplate?
Readers, thermal cyclers and plate handlers locate the plate on its skirt and deck. A warped plate tilts the wells, which upsets reading and sealing. Flatness comes from balanced gating, even cooling and controlled ejection.
  • Which Resin Is Used for PCR Plates and Microplates?
PCR plates are usually thin-wall PP, which handles thermal cycling. Assay microplates are often PS, clear or pigmented black or white for optical reading. PC is used for some rigid or clear formats and must be dried.
  • How Is Well Volume Kept Consistent Across the Plate?
Well volume follows wall thickness, so each core needs its own cooling and must not deflect during filling. Fast, balanced injection keeps flow lengths even, and sampled plates are checked at wells across the whole layout.
  • Can Pratishna Recommend a Machine for My Microplate or PCR Plate?
Yes. Share the plate drawing, format, resin, part weight, mould dimensions, cavity count and planned automation, and Pratishna Engineers will recommend a suitable machine.
  • Does the Machine Suit Other Laboratory Consumables Too?
Yes, subject to the mould. It can also run pipette tips, petri dishes, laboratory trays and test kit housings, each on its own tool.
