Injection Moulding Machine for Luggage Wheels

Luggage wheels, including spinner wheels, hubs, housings and forks, are produced on horizontal injection moulding machines in glass-filled nylon, PC/ABS and POM, with a TPR or TPU tread on quieter wheels. Cavity count, tread construction and fork size decide the machine. Hub roundness and bearing seat accuracy matter most, as they control noise and rolling.

Machine choice for wheels turns on whether the tread is overmoulded or fitted separately. Pratishna Engineers builds special purpose machines to application for two-shot wheels and supplies horizontal machines for single-material hubs, housings and forks.

Share your wheel drawing, tread type and materials, and Pratishna Engineers will recommend a machine for the hub, fork and housing tools.

Machine Requirements for Luggage Wheel Moulding

A luggage wheel is judged on noise, rolling and how long its bearings last, and the moulding sets all three. Check these points:

  • Wear-resistant screw for glass-filled nylon hubs
  • Drying of nylon and PC/ABS against splay and brittle parts
  • Even cooling around the hub for round bearing seats
  • Bonding pair of hub resin and TPR or TPU tread
  • Core pins that hold axle holes in forks to size
  • Second injection unit for treads moulded onto the hub

Recommended Machine for Luggage Wheels

Wheels with a bonded TPR or TPU tread need a special purpose machine built to application. Single-material hubs, housings and forks suit the E Series (75-180 T) for most wheel sizes, while multi-cavity fork moulds and larger wheels can step up to the C Series (140-320 T) or the H Series (120-350 T).

FAQs / Buyer Questions

What wheel makers usually want to know before they buy a machine.

  • Which Injection Moulding Machine Is Used to Make Luggage Wheels?
It depends on the construction. Plain wheels, hubs and forks run on horizontal E Series machines, with C or H for bigger tools. A wheel with an overmoulded tread needs a two-shot machine built to application.
  • Why Are Spinner Wheel Housings Often Moulded in PC/ABS?
PC on its own can crack when the case is dropped on a wheel, while the PC/ABS blend stays tough under impact. Like nylon, the blend has to be dried before moulding to avoid splay and weak parts.
  • How Is a Soft Tread Bonded to the Hub?
In a two-shot wheel the TPR or TPU tread is moulded straight onto the rigid hub, so the two materials must be a bonding pair. The bond is checked by peel test. Treads can also be moulded separately and assembled.
  • Are Bearings and Axles Moulded Into the Wheel?
No. Bearings, the steel axle and rivets are assembled after moulding. The moulded hub and fork have to hold bearing seats and axle holes to size so the wheel turns freely through mileage testing.
  • Can Pratishna Recommend a Machine for My Luggage Wheel?
Yes. Share the wheel and fork drawings or samples, materials, tread construction, part weights, mould dimensions, cavities and monthly volumes, and Pratishna Engineers will recommend a suitable machine.
  • Does the Machine Suit Other Luggage Hardware Too?
Yes. Standard series machines can also mould trolley components, case latches and hinges, bag feet and luggage lock housings, subject to the mould.
