Injection Moulding Machine for Aerosol Actuators and Overcaps

Aerosol actuators and overcaps are moulded from PP, HDPE or LDPE on horizontal injection moulding machines, with separate multi-cavity tools for the actuator, its orifice insert and the overcap. Machine size follows cavity count and overcap diameter. Holding the tiny orifice and spray channel dimensions matters most, because they set the spray pattern.

Machine choice for aerosol parts rests on repeatable small shots for the actuator and its insert, and steady colour and gloss on the overcap. Pratishna Engineers supplies hybrid and horizontal injection moulding machines for aerosol component moulding and can recommend a configuration for each tool.

Machine Requirements for Aerosol Actuator and Overcap Moulding

An aerosol pack depends on a spray channel and orifice measured in fractions of a millimetre, and an overcap that matches the can. Check:

  • Accurate small shots for actuator orifice inserts
  • Side core for the actuator spray channel
  • Flash-free orifice and stem bore for a clean spray
  • Colour match and even gloss on cosmetic overcaps
  • Overcap snap ring that grips the can shoulder firmly
  • Material tested against propellant and formulation at storage temperature

Recommended Machine for Aerosol Actuators and Overcaps

Actuator and orifice insert tools are small, so the E Series (75-180 T) suits many of them, with the Hybrid PH Series (120-140 T) for high-cavity actuator moulds that need very repeatable shots. Overcap moulds with more cavities or larger diameters can run on the H Series (120-350 T).

FAQs / Buyer Questions

Questions aerosol component makers raise most often.

  • Which Injection Moulding Machine Is Used to Make Aerosol Actuators and Overcaps?
Small to medium horizontal machines are used, chosen for each tool. Insert and actuator moulds often fit the E Series or Hybrid PH, while multi-cavity overcap tools for wider cans may need the H Series.
  • Why Are the Actuator and Its Insert Moulded Separately?
The orifice insert carries the swirl and exit features that shape the spray, and these are too small to mould accurately inside the actuator body. Separate tools let each part be held to its own tolerance before assembly.
  • How Is the Overcap Colour Kept Matched to the Pack?
Overcaps are coloured with masterbatch matched to the brand shade and checked against a colour standard. Stable melt temperature, a clean barrel after each colour change and consistent mould temperature keep the shade and gloss steady.
  • Does the Formulation Affect the Choice of Material?
Yes. The actuator touches the product and propellant, so its material must resist swelling or cracking at storage temperature. PP, HDPE and LDPE grades are tested against the specific formulation before tooling is released.
  • Can Pratishna Recommend a Machine for My Aerosol Actuator or Overcap?
Yes. Share drawings or samples of the actuator, insert and overcap, materials, part weights, mould sizes, cavity counts and output, and Pratishna Engineers will recommend suitable machines.
  • Does the Machine Suit Other Dispensing Closures Too?
Yes. The same series can mould sprayers, dispensing pumps, flip-top caps, spouts and pourers, as long as mould size and cavity count suit the machine.
