Injection Moulding Machine for Knobs, Handwheels, Levers and Handles

Knobs, handwheels, levers and handles are made on horizontal injection moulding machines from glass-filled PA6, ABS, PP or POM, often with moulded-in metal threaded inserts. Machine size follows part diameter, cavity count and shot weight. On the show face, sink is the main risk: a solid boss beneath it sinks, so thick sections are cored and ribbed.

Machine choice for these parts turns on insert handling, cosmetic finish and the loading time inserts add to each cycle. Pratishna Engineers supplies horizontal injection moulding machines for knob and handle moulding and can recommend a configuration for your part, inserts and output.

Machine Requirements for Knob and Handle Moulding

Knobs and handles need a clean show face over a structural core, and many carry metal inserts. Main points for the machine and process:

  • Cored and ribbed sections to keep sink off the show face
  • Insert loading time allowed for brass or steel threaded inserts
  • Gate location that keeps vestige away from the grip face
  • Drying for glass-filled PA6 and ABS before moulding
  • Weld line control in handwheel rims between spokes
  • Mould temperature control for gloss or texture on ABS

Recommended Machine for Knobs, Handwheels, Levers and Handles

Small control knobs and levers are compact parts that fit the E Series (75-180 T), often in multi-cavity moulds. Large handwheels, long handles and moulds with side cores for undercuts need more platen space and clamping force, so the C Series (140-320 T) is the usual next step, with the H Series (120-350 T) for the largest moulds.

FAQs / Buyer Questions

Questions buyers ask most when setting up knob, lever and handle moulding.

  • Which Injection Moulding Machine Is Used to Make Knobs and Handwheels?
A horizontal machine sized to the part and mould. Control knobs and small levers usually suit the E Series, while large handwheels and long handles, especially with side cores, need the C or H Series.
  • Are Threaded Inserts Moulded In or Pressed In?
Both methods are used. Moulded-in brass or steel inserts give strong pull-out but add loading time to every cycle. Pressing inserts in after moulding keeps the cycle short, with a moulded hole sized for the insert.
  • How Is Sink Avoided on a Knob Show Face?
Avoid thick solid sections behind the visible face. Core out the boss, add ribs of even thickness for strength, and hold pressure long enough to pack the part. A textured face also helps hide small surface marks.
  • Can Black Phenolic Handwheels Be Injection Moulded?
Traditional black phenolic handwheels and handles are thermoset parts, usually compression moulded, so they are quoted separately. A thermoplastic version in glass-filled PA6 or POM can be injection moulded on the listed series.
  • Can Pratishna Recommend a Machine for My Knob or Handle?
Yes. Share the part drawing or sample, material, insert type, part weight, mould dimensions, number of cavities and production quantity, and Pratishna Engineers will recommend a suitable machine.
  • Does the Machine Suit Other Engineering Hardware Too?
Yes. Machines in this class also mould plastic brackets, snap-fit clips and spacers, castor wheels and precision mechanical parts, depending on the mould and material.
