Injection Moulding Machine for Smart Meter Enclosures

Smart meter enclosures are made on horizontal injection moulding machines, as separate base, cover and terminal cover moulds, from flame-retardant PC, PC/ABS or PPO. Machine size follows the projected area of the cover, the wall thickness approved for flame testing and the depth of the base. Flatness of the sealing face is the process point that matters most.

Selection for meter enclosures centres on holding wall thickness and face flatness shot after shot, with dry PC reaching the hopper. Pratishna Engineers supplies horizontal injection moulding machines for smart meter enclosure production and can recommend a configuration for your base, cover and mould set.

Machine Requirements for Smart Meter Enclosure Moulding

A meter enclosure carries live parts, a display window and a sealed joint, so the machine has to hold these points steady:

  • Flame-rated PC or PC/ABS moulded at the tested wall thickness
  • Flat sealing face on base and cover for gasket contact
  • Hopper dryer matched to PC throughput to prevent splay
  • UV-stabilised grade for meters mounted outdoors or in sunlight
  • Tamper seal lugs and screw towers filled without short shots
  • Clean seat for a separately moulded clear PC window

Recommended Machine for Smart Meter Enclosures

Terminal covers and smaller single-phase covers usually fit the E Series (75-180 T). Full-size bases and covers, or family moulds that pair them, move to the C Series (140-320 T) or H Series (120-350 T), where platen size and opening stroke take a deep base mould without strain.

FAQs / Buyer Questions

Questions meter makers and their moulders ask before choosing a machine.

  • Which Injection Moulding Machine Is Used to Make Smart Meter Enclosures?
An E Series horizontal machine handles terminal covers and smaller covers. Bases and full covers usually need the C or H Series, picked by the projected area of the cover and how deep the base mould is.
  • Why Does Wall Thickness Matter for Flame Testing?
Glow wire and flame results apply to the grade at the thickness that was tested. Thinning a wall to save material or cycle time can take the part outside that approval, so moulded walls should match the test sample.
  • Is the Display Window Moulded With the Cover?
Usually the window is a separate optical-grade PC moulding, fitted or welded into the cover at assembly. Covers with the window moulded in by a second shot are a different process and can be discussed separately.
  • How Is the Sealing Face Kept Flat?
Even walls, balanced cooling on both mould halves and gating that avoids long one-sided flow stop the base and cover from bowing. Warpage on the sealing face can fail the ingress test even when the part looks right.
  • Can Pratishna Recommend a Machine for My Smart Meter Enclosure?
Yes. Share the base, cover and terminal cover drawings, approved grade, wall thickness, mould dimensions, cavities and yearly volume, and Pratishna Engineers will suggest a suitable machine.
  • Does the Machine Suit Other Electrical and Electronics Parts Too?
Yes. The same machines can mould related parts such as electricity meter boxes, distribution board enclosures, inverter bodies and stabiliser housings, subject to the mould and grade.
