Injection Moulding Machine for Set-Top Box Housings

Set-top box housings are made on horizontal injection moulding machines, as a flat top cover, base and front bezel, from flame-retardant ABS or PC/ABS. Machine size depends on the projected area of the top cover, the mould size and whether cover and base share a family mould. Sink and warp on the large flat top cause most rejections.

For set-top boxes, selection focuses on holding pressure control at screw bosses and even cooling across a wide flat panel. Pratishna Engineers supplies horizontal injection moulding machines for set-top box housing production and can recommend a configuration for your parts and mould.

Machine Requirements for Set-Top Box Housing Moulding

A set-top box housing is mostly a large flat panel with screw bosses and an IR window, which sets these requirements:

  • Cored and gusseted screw bosses to avoid sink on top
  • Holding pressure profile that packs bosses without flash
  • Balanced cooling across the large flat top cover
  • Flame-rated ABS or PC/ABS around the power supply area
  • IR-transmitting grade or a separate moulded IR window
  • Platen and tie-bar room for wide cover moulds

Recommended Machine for Set-Top Box Housings

Compact boxes and front bezels can run on the E Series (75-180 T). Full-width top covers and bases, or one family mould for both, usually need the C Series (140-320 T). For the widest covers, the H Series (120-350 T) gives more clamp margin and platen space. Bezels and IR windows can share a smaller machine.

FAQs / Buyer Questions

Questions set-top box makers raise when planning a housing mould.

  • Which Injection Moulding Machine Is Used to Make Set-Top Box Housings?
Bezels and small boxes run on the E Series. Top covers and bases of standard boxes generally fit the C Series, with the H Series chosen when the mould is wide or runs a family of parts.
  • How Is Sink Avoided at Screw Bosses?
Bosses are cored out and supported by gussets rather than moulded solid, keeping walls close to nominal thickness. Correct holding pressure and time then pack the area without pushing flash at the parting line.
  • How Is the IR Window Handled?
Either the front bezel is moulded in an IR-transmitting grade, or a small separate window is moulded and fitted. A separate window lets the main housing run in standard flame-rated ABS or PC/ABS.
  • Should the Top Cover Be Gloss or Textured?
A light texture hides flow lines, minor sink and handling scratches on a large flat panel. Gloss covers need a polished cavity, steady mould temperature and careful gate placement, since every flaw shows.
  • Can Pratishna Recommend a Machine for My Set-Top Box Housing?
Yes. Share the top cover, base and bezel drawings, grade, mould dimensions, cavities and monthly volume, and Pratishna Engineers will suggest a suitable machine.
  • Does the Machine Suit Other Consumer Electronics Housings Too?
Yes. Similar machines can mould router housings, remote control housings, UPS housings and inverter bodies, subject to mould size and grade.
