Injection Moulding Machine for Extension Board Bodies and Covers

Extension board bodies and covers are made on horizontal injection moulding machines, from flame-rated ABS, PC/ABS, PC or FR PP, often with a hot runner or several gates. Board length and mould size set the machine more than clamp force does. Flow length against wall thickness is the main limit, since the housing is long and thin.

Selection for extension boards looks at injection speed and pressure to fill a long thin shell, plus platen size for long moulds. Pratishna Engineers supplies horizontal injection moulding machines for extension board bodies and covers and can recommend a configuration for your board length and socket count.

Machine Requirements for Extension Board Moulding

An extension board is a long housing around a live busbar, so filling and flame rating come first. What to check:

  • Injection capacity to fill long thin walls without short shots
  • Hot runner or several gates along the board length
  • Flame-rated grade wherever the busbar runs
  • Screw bosses cored and gusseted to stop sink outside
  • Weld lines kept away from socket openings and snap hooks
  • Platen and tie-bar space for long moulds

Recommended Machine for Extension Boards

Most board bodies and covers, with their long moulds, sit on the C Series (140-320 T). The longest boards, deeper bodies with switch and indicator pockets, or body and cover in one family mould suit the H Series (120-350 T). Short boards and small covers or switch caps can run on the E Series (75-180 T).

FAQs / Buyer Questions

Common questions from extension board and spike guard makers.

  • Which Injection Moulding Machine Is Used to Make Extension Boards?
Long bodies and covers are commonly run on the C Series, with the H Series for the longest boards or family moulds. Short boards and small loose parts can go on the E Series.
  • Why Does Flow Length Limit an Extension Board More Than Clamp Force?
The shell is long with thin walls, so melt cools before it reaches the far end. Fill pressure and speed run out before clamp force does, which is why a hot runner or extra gates are planned.
  • How Is Sink Avoided Over Screw Bosses?
Bosses on the inside of a cosmetic outer wall telegraph sink through the face. Coring the boss, adding gussets, keeping its wall thinner than the shell and holding pressure long enough avoid it.
  • Which Flame-Rated Grade Suits an Extension Board?
FR ABS and PC/ABS are common for bodies and covers, with PC where more impact strength is wanted and FR PP for lower-cost boards. The grade must carry its flame rating at the moulded wall thickness.
  • Can Pratishna Recommend a Machine for My Extension Board?
Yes. Share the body and cover drawings or samples, grade, part weights, mould size, gating plan and monthly volume, and Pratishna Engineers will recommend a suitable machine.
  • Does the Machine Suit Other Electrical Housings Too?
Yes, subject to the mould. Similar machines run stabiliser housings, UPS housings, electricity meter boxes and distribution board enclosures.
