Injection Moulding Machine for Chain Guards and Chainring Guards

Chain guards and chainring guards are produced on horizontal injection moulding machines, typically in PP or ABS for chain covers and nylon for impact-loaded chainring guards. Guard length, projected area and mould size against the platen set machine size. Keeping a long, flat cover from warping while the mounting bosses fill without sink is the main process point.

Long chain covers need platen room and even cooling, while ring guards need flatness and a true bore. Pratishna Engineers provides horizontal injection moulding machines for both styles of guard and can suggest a configuration once the mould size is known.

Machine Requirements for Chain Guard and Chainring Guard Moulding

Chain covers are long and shallow, and ring guards are flat discs, so flatness and mould fit drive the choice. Look at:

  • Platen and tie-bar space for long chain cover moulds
  • Balanced cooling to keep flat covers from bowing
  • Bosses and clips filled without sink on the show face
  • Gloss or texture on the outer cosmetic face
  • Dried nylon for tough chainring guard discs
  • Gate layout that keeps ring guards flat and round

Recommended Machine for Chain Guards and Chainring Guards

Chainring guards and short half covers are mid-sized parts that suit the E Series (75-180 T). Full chain cases for city and roadster cycles are long, so mould length and opening often point to the H Series (120-350 T), with the C Series (140-320 T) for multi-cavity or larger tools.

FAQs / Buyer Questions

Questions chain guard makers often ask.

  • Which Injection Moulding Machine Is Used to Make Chain Guards?
Ring guards and short covers often run on the E Series. Full-length chain cases usually need the H or C Series, since long tools need room between the tie-bars and enough opening to release the part.
  • How Do You Stop a Long Chain Cover From Warping?
Even wall thickness, ribs that avoid thick junctions, balanced cooling on both mould halves and enough cooling time help. PP shrinks more than ABS, so PP covers often need closer attention to gating and cooling to stay flat.
  • Which Material Suits a Chainring Guard?
Nylon takes impact from stones and kerbs without cracking, so it suits ring guards on mountain and sports cycles. PP and ABS suit lighter guards on city cycles. Nylon must be dried before moulding to keep its toughness.
  • Can the Guard Carry a Logo or Gloss Finish?
Yes. Logos and textures are cut into the mould, and a polished cavity gives a gloss face on ABS. Sink above bosses and flow lines show clearly on gloss, so gate position and holding pressure need attention.
  • Can Pratishna Recommend a Machine for My Chain Guard?
Yes. Share the guard drawing or sample, guard type, material, part weight, mould dimensions, cavities and quantity, and Pratishna Engineers will recommend a suitable machine.
  • Does the Machine Suit Other Bicycle Cover Parts Too?
Yes. Similar machines can mould cycle mudguards, saddle base shells, bicycle pedals and bell housings, subject to the mould and material.
