Injection Moulding Machine for Bicycle Pedals

Plastic bicycle pedals are moulded on horizontal injection moulding machines from glass-filled PA6 or PA66, PP or ABS, with the pedal body formed around a bore for the metal spindle. Machine size depends on the platform’s projected area, the shot weight of the thick spindle boss and the cavity count. With nylon, drying the granules before moulding matters most.

For pedals, machine selection centres on shot capacity for the heavy boss, a screw that withstands glass fill and holding pressure control against sink. Pratishna Engineers supplies horizontal injection moulding machines for pedal bodies and can suggest a set-up once your mould and material are known.

Machine Requirements for Bicycle Pedal Moulding

A pedal body joins a load-bearing spindle boss to an open platform, and the machine has to fill both well. Points to check include:

  • Shot capacity for the thick spindle boss and cage
  • Wear-resistant screw and barrel for glass-filled nylon
  • Dryer sized to the hourly nylon throughput
  • Holding pressure control to limit sink at the boss
  • Mould space for reflector pockets and spindle bore cores
  • Ejection that clears the grip studs without drag marks

Recommended Machine for Bicycle Pedals

A pedal body is a mid-sized part, but its thick boss and glass fill call for a well-matched barrel. The E Series (75-180 T) suits many single and paired cavity pedal moulds. Wide platform pedals or moulds with more cavities move the choice to the C Series (140-320 T) or the H Series (120-350 T).

FAQs / Buyer Questions

Questions pedal makers ask before choosing a machine.

  • Which Injection Moulding Machine Is Used to Make Bicycle Pedals?
A horizontal machine is the usual choice. Budget PP pedals in modest cavity counts often sit in the E Series range, while glass-filled sports pedals and bigger tools step up to the C or H Series. Final size follows the mould and shot weight.
  • Why Is Glass-Filled Nylon Used for Pedal Bodies?
Glass-filled PA6 or PA66 gives the stiffness and impact strength a pedal needs under a rider’s weight. The glass is abrasive, so a wear-resistant screw and barrel is advised, and gates are placed so weld lines do not fall at the spindle boss.
  • Does Nylon Need Drying Before Moulding Pedals?
Yes. Nylon picks up moisture from the air, and wet granules give silver streaks, a poor surface and brittle pedals. Dry the material in a hopper or desiccant dryer to the grade supplier’s moisture limit before it reaches the barrel.
  • How Are the Spindle and Reflectors Fitted?
Many pedal bodies are moulded with a bore and pockets, and the spindle, bushes and reflectors are assembled afterwards. Some designs place a metal sleeve or reflector in the mould as an insert, which needs locating features in the tool and a steady loading routine.
  • Can Pratishna Recommend a Machine for My Bicycle Pedal?
Yes. Share the pedal drawing or sample, material grade, part weight, mould size, cavities, any inserts and your monthly quantity, and Pratishna Engineers will recommend a suitable machine.
  • Does the Machine Suit Other Bicycle Parts Too?
Yes. The same machines can mould related parts such as toe clips, water bottle cages, brake levers and chain guards, subject to the mould size and material.
