Injection Moulding Machine for Pencil Sharpeners

Sharpener bodies are moulded on horizontal injection moulding machines in high-cavity tools, from PS, ABS or PP, with clear SAN or PS for containers. Shot weight is small, so cavity count and mould size set the machine. The blade seat matters most, because its angle and depth, with the screw boss, decide shaving quality.

Machine selection for sharpeners focuses on a repeatable blade seat in every cavity and screw bosses that take the blade screw without cracking. Pratishna Engineers supplies horizontal injection moulding machines for sharpener production and can recommend a configuration for your body, container and mould.

Machine Requirements for Sharpener Moulding

A plastic sharpener body is a small blade holder first and a cosmetic part second, while metal bodies are die-cast and not covered here. Points to check when selecting a machine:

  • Blade seat angle and depth held across all cavities
  • Screw boss that takes the blade screw without cracking
  • No sink or flash on the blade seat face
  • Insert loading where the blade is moulded in
  • Clear SAN or PS container without haze or scratches
  • Small shot weight held steady in a high-cavity mould

Recommended Machine for Pencil Sharpeners

Sharpener bodies weigh very little, so machine size is set by the mould frame and cavity count. The E Series (75-180 T) covers many body and lid moulds. Container sharpeners with a larger clear bin, or high-cavity tools with a wide footprint, may suit the H Series (120-350 T). Insert-moulded blade versions need loading time allowed in the cycle.

FAQs / Buyer Questions

Common buyer questions on sharpener moulds and machines.

  • Which Injection Moulding Machine Is Used to Make Sharpeners?
A horizontal machine sized to the full mould. Single-hole and double-hole body tools often fit the E Series, while container sharpeners with bigger bins or very high cavity counts may go to the H Series.
  • Is the Sharpener Blade Moulded In or Screwed Down?
Both are used. The stamped steel blade is bought in, then either screwed onto a moulded boss or placed in the mould as an insert. Insert moulding removes the screw but adds loading time and needs a mould that locates the blade accurately.
  • Why Do Screw Bosses Crack on PS Sharpeners?
PS is brittle, so a boss with thin walls or a tight pilot hole can split when the blade screw is driven. Sound boss design and keeping gates and weld lines away from the boss reduce cracking. ABS or PP give more margin.
  • Which Material Suits a Container Sharpener Bin?
Clear PS or SAN, so the user can see the shavings level. SAN takes up some moisture and should be dried before moulding, and a polished cavity with gates off the visible face keeps the bin clear.
  • Can Pratishna Recommend a Machine for My Sharpener?
Yes. Share the sharpener drawing or sample, material, blade fixing method, part weight, mould size, number of cavities and required output, and Pratishna Engineers will recommend a suitable machine.
  • Does the Machine Suit Other Stationery Parts Too?
Yes. Similar machines produce pen caps, refill end plugs, file clips and geometry instrument parts, as long as the mould and shot weight fit the machine.
