Injection Moulding Machine for Drum Bungs and Bunghole Plugs
Drum bungs and bunghole plugs are produced on horizontal injection moulding machines with multi-cavity moulds, mostly in HDPE or PP. Bung size, cavity count and the thread release method, slides or unscrewing, decide machine size. Thread form and a flat gasket seat matter most, since closed-head drums seal through the bung.
For bungs, machine choice weighs shot consistency across cavities, holding pressure for thick sections and repeatable thread dimensions. Pratishna Engineers provides horizontal injection moulding machines for drum closure moulding and can advise a configuration for each bung size.

Machine Requirements for Drum Bung Moulding
A drum bung is a tested safety closure on closed-head drums, so moulding has to hold:
- Thread form repeatable across cavities and mould changes
- Flat, flash-free gasket seat on every bung
- Holding pressure to prevent sink and voids in thick heads
- Slides or unscrewing cores for external threads
- Steady shot weight so torque retention stays consistent
- Controlled HDPE and PP melt with even cooling
Recommended Machine for Drum Bungs
Drum bungs and plugs are small to medium parts, so the E Series (75-180 T) covers most bung moulds by cavity count. Larger bungs in high-cavity tools, or unscrewing moulds with a taller stack, suit the H Series (120-350 T). Each bung size is checked against its own mould before a model is fixed.

FAQs / Buyer Questions
Questions drum makers and closure suppliers raise about bung moulding.
Which Injection Moulding Machine Is Used to Make Drum Bungs?
Most bung and plug moulds sit within the E Series, sized by bung diameter and cavities. High-cavity tools for the larger bung, or unscrewing moulds, may need the H Series. Small and large bung sizes usually run in separate moulds. Why Is a Drum Bung Treated as a Safety Component?
A closed-head drum has no lid, so the bung is the seal. Thread form, gasket seat and torque retention are tested with the drum, and a bung approved for one drum cannot be swapped for a look-alike part. How Are the External Threads of a Bung Moulded?
Threads are formed by slides in the cavity or by an unscrewing mould. Slides leave a parting line across the thread, which must stay flash-free, while unscrewing avoids that line but adds mould complexity.
What Causes a Bung to Lose Torque or Leak?
Common causes are sink or voids in the thick head, a gasket seat out of flat, and thread dimensions drifting between cavities. Holding pressure, cooling time and gauging each cavity control all three. Can Pratishna Recommend a Machine for My Drum Bung?
Yes. Share the bung and plug drawings, thread size, material, gasket design, cavity count, thread release method, mould size and output target, and Pratishna Engineers will suggest a machine.Does the Machine Suit Other Drum and Can Closures Too?
Yes. Similar E and H Series machines can mould jerry-can caps, lube and chemical bottle screw caps, dispensing taps and security seals, depending on the mould.
