Injection Moulding Machine for Plastic Buttons

Plastic buttons in ABS, nylon, acrylic (PMMA) and POM are made on horizontal injection moulding machines, usually in high-cavity moulds. Machine size follows the cavity count, the projected area of buttons and runner, and the shot weight. Material route matters first, since polyester and urea buttons are cast or compression moulded rather than injection moulded.

For thermoplastic buttons, machine selection focuses on a repeatable small shot across many cavities, clean colour changes and fine fill at the buttonhole cores. Pratishna Engineers supplies horizontal injection moulding machines for button production and can recommend a configuration for your button range and mould.

Machine Requirements for Plastic Button Moulding

Button tools carry many small cavities with fine core pins, so the machine has to hold a small shot steady across all of them. Points to check:

  • Fine buttonhole core pins that fill without flash
  • Side cores for the sideways hole in shank buttons
  • Plating-grade ABS and a polished mould for metallised finishes
  • Drying of nylon and PMMA before moulding
  • Colour matched to a fabric shade across every lot
  • Small, repeatable shot weight across a high-cavity mould

Recommended Machine for Plastic Buttons

Buttons are small, so clamping force is set by the number of cavities and the runner more than by the button itself. Hybrid PH (120-140 T), with electric injection, and the E Series (75-180 T) suit many button moulds. Large hot runner tools, or family moulds carrying several button sizes, can move to the H Series (120-350 T).

FAQs / Buyer Questions

Questions button makers ask before choosing a moulding machine.

  • Which Injection Moulding Machine Is Used to Make Plastic Buttons?
A horizontal machine in the smaller tonnage bands is the usual choice. Hybrid PH or E Series machines run many button moulds, and the H Series takes larger hot runner tools where cavity count and runner area push the clamping force up.
  • Can Polyester and Urea Buttons Be Injection Moulded?
No. Polyester buttons are cast into rods or sheets, then cut, drilled and polished, and urea buttons are compression moulded as a thermoset. Injection moulding applies to thermoplastic buttons such as ABS, nylon, acrylic and POM.
  • Which Material Suits Electroplated Buttons?
Plating-grade ABS is the common choice for metallised buttons. The mould needs a high polish, and flow lines, weld lines or gate marks show through the plating, so gate position and melt temperature are set with the finish in mind.
  • How Is Flash at the Buttonhole Controlled?
Buttonhole pins shut off against the opposite mould half, and wear there leaves thin flash that catches thread. Well-fitted shut-offs, correct clamping force and holding pressure no higher than the button needs keep the holes clean.
  • Can Pratishna Recommend a Machine for My Plastic Button?
Yes. Share your button drawing or sample, material and finish, the sizes in your range, mould dimensions, cavity count and monthly quantity, and Pratishna Engineers will recommend a suitable machine.
  • Does the Machine Suit Other Garment Parts Too?
Yes. Machines in this class can also mould snap fasteners, cord stoppers, lingerie hardware and belt buckles, subject to each mould and material.
