Injection Moulding Machine for PET Preforms

PET preforms, the test-tube shapes later blown into bottles, are made on PET-specific injection moulding machines from bottle-grade PET or rPET, in hot runner moulds. Cavity count and preform weight set clamp and shot size. Drying matters most, because wet PET breaks down in the barrel, losing IV and raising acetaldehyde.

For preforms, selection focuses on a low-shear screw, drying and hot runner capacity matched to output, and post-mould cooling that keeps preforms clear. Pratishna Engineers supplies PET injection moulding machines for preform production and can recommend a configuration for your neck finish and cavity plan.

Machine Requirements for PET Preform Moulding

PET behaves differently from the polyolefins used for caps, and a preform line is built around that. Main requirements:

  • Dryer that brings PET and rPET down to low moisture
  • Low-compression screw that limits shear and acetaldehyde
  • Hot runner with individual zone control for every drop
  • Post-mould cooling so thick walls stay clear
  • Steady shot weight for even preform weight across cavities
  • Neck finish dimensions held for thread and seal fit

Recommended Machine for PET Preforms

Preform machines are sized by cavity count, preform weight and the projected area of the cavity set. Lower and mid cavity tools fall within the PET injection moulding machines (75-260 T). Tools needing more clamp than that are discussed on request. Drying, hot runner control and post-mould cooling should be planned together with the machine.

FAQs / Buyer Questions

Questions preform makers and bottlers raise before a PET machine order.

  • Which Injection Moulding Machine Is Used to Make PET Preforms?
A machine built for PET rather than a general-purpose one. Pratishna PET injection moulding machines cover lower and mid cavity preform tools, with larger tonnages discussed on request for high-cavity systems.
  • Can a General-Purpose Machine Mould PET Preforms?
It can, but results suffer. A standard screw adds shear heat, which raises acetaldehyde and IV loss, and without proper drying and post-mould cooling preforms can turn hazy. The faults carry through to the blown bottle.
  • How Should PET and rPET Be Dried Before Moulding?
Both need a desiccant dryer sized to throughput, with dry air at the hopper and enough residence time. rPET varies more from lot to lot, so moisture and IV checks before each batch help.
  • What Causes White Haze in a Preform?
Haze usually comes from crystallisation: thick walls cooling too slowly, too little holding pressure or cooling time, or an overheated gate area. Wet resin and high melt temperature make it worse.
  • Can Pratishna Recommend a Machine for My PET Preform?
Yes. Share the preform drawing, weight, neck finish, PET or rPET grade, cavity count and required output, and Pratishna Engineers will recommend a suitable PET machine.
  • Does the Machine Suit Other Bottle Packaging Parts Too?
The PET machine runs preforms of different weights and neck finishes, given the mould. Caps for those bottles, such as CSD caps, water bottle caps and flip-top caps, run on standard horizontal machines instead.
