Injection Moulding Machine for Sprockets, Pulleys and Timing Pulleys

Plastic sprockets, pulleys and timing pulleys come off horizontal injection moulding machines in POM, MoS2-filled POM, PA66 or glass-filled PA66. Outside diameter, hub length and cavity count set mould size and shot weight. Pitch accuracy across the full diameter is the acceptance test, so the part is centre gated and packed evenly to keep tooth spacing true all round.

A sprocket or pulley also has to grip its shaft, so the hub bore and keyway are held as closely as the teeth. Pratishna Engineers can advise on a horizontal injection moulding machine for sprocket and pulley moulds, sized to your part and output.

Machine Requirements for Sprocket and Pulley Moulding

Sprockets and pulleys are checked on pitch around the whole rim and on fit to the shaft. Points to check:

  • Centre or ring gating for even pitch around the rim
  • Hub bore and keyway held to size for shaft fit
  • Cored-out webs to avoid sink between hub and rim
  • Drying of PA66 and glass-filled grades
  • Steady mould temperature for repeatable POM shrinkage
  • Flash control on teeth and flanges at the parting line

Recommended Machine for Sprockets, Pulleys and Timing Pulleys

Small sprockets and timing pulleys run in multi-cavity moulds that mostly suit the E Series (75-180 T). Larger pulleys, sheaves with long hubs and glass-filled jobs that need more shot weight or a wider mould go to the H Series (120-350 T), which also handles high-cavity tools for small sprockets.

FAQs / Buyer Questions

What sprocket and pulley makers ask most often.

  • Which Injection Moulding Machine Is Used to Make Sprockets and Pulleys?
Size follows the outside diameter and cavity plan. E Series machines suit most small sprocket and timing pulley moulds, and the H Series covers larger pulleys, long-hub sheaves and high-cavity tools.
  • Why Is MoS2-Filled Acetal Used for Sprockets and Sheaves?
MoS2-filled POM runs with lower friction and wear under load than plain POM, which suits sprockets, sheaves and running bushings. It is usually dark grey or black, so it is chosen where load capacity matters more than colour.
  • What Decides Pitch Accuracy on a Moulded Sprocket?
Even shrinkage all round the rim. Centre or ring gating, uniform web thickness and balanced cooling keep tooth spacing true, and the cavity is cut with shrinkage allowance for the chosen grade, since POM and glass-filled nylon shrink differently.
  • Can the Hub Bore and Keyway Be Moulded to Size?
Yes, provided the hub wall is even and well cooled. A loose bore or rounded keyway lets the part slip on the shaft, so the core pin and key form are sized for shrinkage and checked after moulding.
  • Can Pratishna Recommend a Machine for My Sprocket or Pulley?
Yes. Share the drawing or sample, material, pitch and outside diameter, part weight, mould dimensions, number of cavities and yearly quantity, and Pratishna Engineers will recommend a suitable machine.
  • Does the Machine Suit Other Drive and Conveyor Parts Too?
Yes. Machines in this range can also mould plastic gears, roller bodies, chain and conveyor components and castor wheels, subject to the mould.
