Injection Moulding Machine for Plastic Gears

Plastic gears such as spur gears, helical gears and worm wheels are made on horizontal injection moulding machines from POM, PA66, glass-filled PA66 or PBT. Machine size follows gear diameter, cavity count and shot weight, and shaft inserts add loading time. Shrinkage matters most: gate position and even packing decide pitch error, runout and backlash.

Tooth form drifts with any change in melt temperature or holding pressure, so gear moulding needs a machine that repeats the same shot every cycle. Pratishna Engineers builds horizontal and hybrid injection moulding machines for gear makers and can suggest a set-up to match your gear and mould.

Machine Requirements for Plastic Gear Moulding

Gears are judged on tooth accuracy and running noise, and both depend on how steady the process is. Points to check:

  • Centre or balanced multi-point gating for round, concentric teeth
  • Repeatable shot size and holding pressure for constant shrinkage
  • Stable mould temperature to limit pitch and backlash error
  • Drying of PA66 and PA46 before moulding
  • Insert loading room for gears moulded onto steel shafts
  • Wear-resistant screw and barrel for glass-filled nylon

Recommended Machine for Plastic Gears

Spur and helical gears are usually small parts in multi-cavity moulds, and the Hybrid PH (120-140 T) suits them where electric injection helps hold tooth form. E Series machines (75-180 T) cover a broad spread of gear moulds, while the H Series (120-350 T) takes larger worm wheels, high-cavity tools and moulds with shaft inserts.

FAQs / Buyer Questions

Questions gear makers ask most before choosing a moulding machine.

  • Which Injection Moulding Machine Is Used to Make Plastic Gears?
A horizontal machine sized to the gear mould. Small gears in multi-cavity tools often run on Hybrid PH or E Series machines, and larger worm wheels or moulds with shaft inserts move up to the H Series.
  • Which Material Should I Use for Moulded Gears?
POM suits quiet, low-friction gears with steady dimensions. PA66 takes shock loads better but absorbs moisture. Glass-filled PA66 adds stiffness for higher torque, though it wears the mating gear faster and shrinks differently along and across the flow.
  • Why Does Gate Position Matter on a Moulded Gear?
Teeth near the gate pack and shrink differently from teeth far from it. A single side gate tends to give an oval gear with pitch and runout error, so a centre gate or balanced gates around the hub are preferred.
  • Can a Gear Be Moulded onto a Metal Shaft?
Yes. The shaft goes into the mould as an insert, usually knurled or flatted for torque grip and preheated to limit stress in the plastic around it. The mould and machine need room for insert loading.
  • Can Pratishna Recommend a Machine for My Plastic Gear?
Yes. Share the gear drawing or sample, material, module and outside diameter, part weight, mould dimensions, number of cavities and yearly quantity, and Pratishna Engineers will recommend a suitable machine.
  • Does the Machine Suit Other Engineering Parts Too?
Yes. The same machines can mould related drive parts such as sprockets and timing pulleys, plain bushings, bearing cages and small cams or levers, subject to the mould.
