Injection Moulding Machine for Electric Plug Tops (Two-Pin and Three-Pin)

Electric plug tops with moulded-in brass pins are made on vertical insert moulding injection moulding machines, from PA66, PC or PP, and from PVC where the plug is moulded onto a cord. Pin count, cavities and insert loading time set the machine. Pin alignment matters most, because spacing and projection are fixed by the plug standard.

For plug tops, selection centres on how the pins are held in the mould and how cleanly the melt packs around the pin roots. Pratishna Engineers supplies vertical injection moulding machines for insert-moulded plug tops, plus horizontal machines for rewireable tops, and can recommend a configuration.

Machine Requirements for Plug Top Moulding

A plug top with moulded-in pins is an insert moulding job, and the pins decide most of the set-up. Look for:

  • Vertical clamp so pins sit in the lower half by gravity
  • Pin holders that keep spacing true under injection pressure
  • No voids or short shots around the pin roots
  • Stable shrinkage so pin positions stay within the standard
  • Dried PA66 and PC to avoid splay and brittle bodies
  • Shuttle or rotary table to load pins during the cycle

Recommended Machine for Plug Tops

Insert-moulded plug tops suit the Vertical PVDL Series (40-80 T), where pins are loaded into an open lower mould between shots. E Series (75-180 T) runs rewireable plug bodies and covers with pins fitted after moulding. H Series (120-350 T) suits larger multi-cavity tools for covers or plug bodies with more cavities.

FAQs / Buyer Questions

What plug makers ask when moving to insert-moulded pins.

  • Which Injection Moulding Machine Is Used to Make Plug Tops?
Plug tops with pins moulded in usually run on vertical presses such as the PVDL Series. Rewireable tops and covers, with pins fitted later, run on horizontal E Series or, for larger multi-cavity tools, H Series machines.
  • Why Use a Vertical Machine for Plug Pins?
Brass pins drop into the open lower mould and stay in place by gravity while the mould closes. On a vertical press, a shuttle or rotary table lets one half be loaded while the other moulds.
  • What Causes Pin Spacing to Go Out of Specification?
A shrinkage shift after a grade, colour or mould temperature change can move the pins. Since pin spacing and projection are set by the plug standard, this is a rejection rather than a cosmetic fault, so the process is locked once approved.
  • Why Are Voids Around the Pin Root a Problem?
A void or short shot where the pin leaves the body traps dirt and moisture, which is where tracking starts. Proper gating, venting near the pins and enough holding pressure pack that area. Urea plug tops are thermoset and use another process.
  • Can Pratishna Recommend a Machine for My Plug Top?
Yes. Share the plug drawing or sample, pin insert details, grade, part weight, mould size, cavities and monthly volume, and Pratishna Engineers will recommend a suitable machine.
  • Does the Machine Suit Other Wiring Accessory Parts Too?
Yes, subject to the mould. Similar machines run socket outlet bodies, extension board covers, cable accessories such as junction connectors, and electronic connectors.
