Injection Moulding Machine for Thick-Wall Lenses

Thick-wall lenses for LED headlamps, projectors and lighting optics are moulded in optical PMMA or PC on injection moulding machines built for injection-compression or layered moulding. Cooling time, not clamping force, sets the cost of the part. Sink on the flat face is the main defect, controlled by lower melt temperature, higher mould temperature, uniform gating and sustained packing.

Because the lens can be built in stages and the cycle runs to minutes, the machine is planned around the process. Pratishna Engineers builds special purpose injection moulding machines to application and can discuss a configuration for your thick lens.

Machine Requirements for Thick-Wall Lens Moulding

Thick sections shrink unevenly as they cool from the outside in. A machine and mould for this work have to handle:

  • Sink control on the flat optical face
  • Long cooling with steady mould temperature throughout
  • Sustained packing to offset volumetric shrinkage
  • Gate design for uniform flow into the thick section
  • Layered or multi-stage moulding where the section is deep
  • Thorough drying of optical PMMA or PC against splay

Recommended Machine for Thick-Wall Lenses

A thick lens ties up the mould for a long cooling time, and staged moulding may split the work across two stations or two machines. That makes the machine a question of process before tonnage. Pratishna Engineers builds special purpose injection moulding machines to application, and the specification is agreed after reviewing the lens, mould and output.

FAQs / Buyer Questions

Points lighting and optics buyers raise before investing in thick-lens moulding.

  • Which Injection Moulding Machine Is Used to Make Thick-Wall Lenses?
A machine planned around the process, often with injection-compression or staged moulding. Pratishna Engineers handles these as special purpose machines built to application, after reviewing the lens, mould and output target.
  • Why Do Thick Lenses Show Sink Marks?
The skin freezes first, and the core keeps shrinking after the gate seals. Lower melt temperature, higher mould temperature, a gate sized to keep packing longer and enough pack time reduce sink on the flat face.
  • Why Is a Thick-Wall Lens Moulded in Layers?
Building the lens in several shots keeps each layer thinner, so each one cools faster and shrinks more evenly. The total cycle can still run to minutes, but sink and internal voids drop.
  • Can Mould Heating Shorten the Thick-Lens Cycle?
Induction or rapid heat-cycle mould heating can cut cooling time on thick PMMA and PC parts. It adds cost to the mould and its controls, so it is weighed against the lens volume needed.
  • Can Pratishna Recommend a Machine for My Thick-Wall Lens?
Yes. Share the lens drawing, thickest section, resin grade, current or planned process, cavity count and annual volume, and Pratishna Engineers will discuss a machine built to application.
  • Does the Machine Suit Other Lens Parts Too?
A special purpose machine is built for its lens, so other parts depend on the mould. Fresnel lenses and diffuser panels can also use injection-compression, while ordinary optical lenses and instrument windows run on standard horizontal machines.
