Injection Moulding Machine for Cable End Caps and Ferrules

Plastic cable end caps and ferrules for bicycles are made on horizontal injection moulding machines in multi-cavity moulds, usually from POM, nylon or PP. Cavity count, runner layout and the very small shot weight decide machine size. Keeping each long core pin centred, so the cable bore stays concentric and the wall even, is the main process point.

For tiny parts in many cavities, selection centres on shot accuracy at low volume, cavity balance and a barrel small enough for short residence time. Pratishna Engineers supplies horizontal injection moulding machines for ferrules and end caps and can recommend a size for your mould.

Machine Requirements for Cable End Cap and Ferrule Moulding

Ferrules and end caps weigh very little each, so the mould, not the part, sets most of the machine needs. Check:

  • Accurate small shots for high cavity moulds
  • Barrel sized to keep POM residence time short
  • Balanced runners so every cavity fills alike
  • Stiff core pins for a concentric cable bore
  • Fast, even cooling for thin tube walls
  • Clean degating and separation of parts from runners

Recommended Machine for Cable End Caps and Ferrules

Cable end caps and ferrules are among the smallest bicycle parts, and their output comes from cavity count rather than part size. The E Series (75-180 T), at the lower end of its range, suits these multi-cavity moulds. Choose the barrel so each shot uses a fair share of its capacity.

FAQs / Buyer Questions

Answers for makers of small cable fittings.

  • Which Injection Moulding Machine Is Used to Make Cable End Caps and Ferrules?
A small E Series machine is the usual match. Cavity count and runner layout matter more than tonnage, and a smaller screw keeps shots accurate and material moving through the barrel quickly.
  • Why Is POM Used for Cable Ferrules?
POM is stiff, wears little where the cable housing seats and holds a clean bore. It can release formaldehyde if overheated, so short residence time, correct barrel temperatures and good shop ventilation matter.
  • How Do You Keep the Ferrule Bore Concentric?
A long, slim core pin can bend under injection pressure and push the bore off centre. Supporting the pin at both ends, gating evenly and controlling injection speed help hold the wall thickness even.
  • Should a Ferrule Mould Use a Hot Runner?
For high cavity moulds, a hot runner cuts runner waste and helps balance the fill. Cold runner tools cost less and suit smaller cavity counts. Either way, check cavity balance at sampling.
  • Can Pratishna Recommend a Machine for My Cable End Cap or Ferrule?
Yes. Share the part drawing or sample, material, part weight, cavities, runner type, mould size and monthly quantity, and Pratishna Engineers will recommend a suitable machine.
  • Does the Machine Suit Other Small Bicycle Fittings Too?
Yes. Similar machines can mould derailleur pulleys, brake lever ratchet parts, cycle reflectors and pedal strap clips, depending on the mould and material.
